Ohrid & St. Naum Day Trip
Day Trip, Private JourneyA full day in UNESCO-listed Ohrid: a Hellenistic theatre, Tsar Samuel’s Fortress, the cliffside church of St. John at Kaneo, a panoramic boat ride, and the lakeside monastery of St. Naum.
Journey to Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage town on the shores of one of Europe’s oldest lakes. Once home to 365 churches — one for every day of the year — Ohrid has long been known as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans.” This full day combines ancient history, Byzantine art, sweeping lake views and a scenic boat ride, before closing with a visit to the tranquil St. Naum Monastery on the lake’s southern shore.
From a 2nd-century Hellenistic theatre to a 10th-century imperial fortress and some of the finest medieval frescoes in the Balkans, this trip offers a rich, immersive day through more than two thousand years of history — framed throughout by the shimmering waters of Lake Ohrid.
The day runs approximately 11 hours, departing at 8:00 AM from Tirana and returning around 6:50 PM via the lakeside town of Pogradec. A valid passport (or ID card, depending on nationality) is required to cross into North Macedonia. Comfortable walking shoes matter here: the day includes uphill sections to the fortress and Kaneo Church, plus cobblestone streets throughout the old town.
- The Ancient Theatre, dating to the Hellenistic 2nd century BC
- Tsar Samuel’s Fortress, capital of the 10th-century Bulgarian Empire
- St. Kliment’s Ohrid School, founded in the 9th century
- The Church of St. John at Kaneo, Ohrid’s most photographed viewpoint
- A panoramic boat ride across Lake Ohrid
- The frescoes of St. Sophia Church, built between the 9th and 11th centuries
- Traditional papermaking at the Paper Museum
- St. Naum Monastery and the springs feeding Lake Ohrid

Your Day
Departure from Tirana
Hotel pickup in Tirana and the drive east into North Macedonia, roughly three hours to Ohrid.
Upper Gate & the Ancient Theatre
The day begins at Ohrid’s Upper Gate, where the Ancient Theatre — carved into the hillside in the 2nd century BC — still overlooks the town.
Tsar Samuel’s Fortress
A climb to the fortress built by Emperor Samuel, who made Ohrid the capital of the Bulgarian Empire in the 10th century. Its ramparts reward the effort with a breathtaking view over the town and lake.
St. Kliment’s School & St. John at Kaneo
A scenic walk through the forest, passing the site of the school founded in the 9th century by St. Kliment, leads to the 13th-century Church of St. John at Kaneo, perched dramatically on a cliff above the water — the single most iconic image of Ohrid.
Panoramic Boat Ride
From Kaneo, a 20-minute boat ride across the lake to the lower town, with the skyline of churches and rooftops rising above the shoreline.
St. Sophia Church & the Paper Museum
St. Sophia, Ohrid’s symbolic landmark, built between the 9th and 11th centuries and celebrated for its medieval frescoes (20 min), followed by the Paper Museum and its centuries-old papermaking technique (15 min).

An hour and a half for lunch and souvenir shopping. Ohrid’s most famous souvenir is the handmade Ohrid pearl, made from fish scales using a technique unique to the town.
St. Naum Monastery
A 40-minute drive along the lakeshore reaches the 10th-century Slavic monastery named after Saint Naum. Explore the grounds and the nearby springs that feed Lake Ohrid.

Why This Journey
What Makes This Journey Different
Ohrid on foot and from the water
A 20-minute panoramic boat ride from Kaneo to the lower town shows the hillside skyline as it was meant to be seen — Ohrid’s name is believed to come from “Vo Hrid,” meaning “on the hill.”
Two thousand years in one walk
The route runs from the Hellenistic Ancient Theatre through Tsar Samuel’s 10th-century fortress and St. Kliment’s 9th-century school to the 13th-century church at Kaneo, in a single continuous walk.
Every entrance covered
Fortress, St. Sophia, the Paper Museum, St. Naum Monastery and the boat ride are all included — no tickets to buy on the day.
Ohrid pearls and the Paper Museum
Two local traditions found nowhere else: papermaking in continuous use since the 16th century, and the handmade Ohrid pearl, crafted from fish scales using a technique discovered by the town’s Filev family.
