Karavasta & Vlorë Day Trip

Day Trip, Private Journey

A day pairing the RAMSAR-protected Karavasta Lagoon and its Dalmatian pelicans with Vlorë, the coastal city where Albania declared independence in 1912.

This day trip pairs two very different sides of Albania: untouched nature and coastal history. The morning begins at Karavasta Lagoon, one of the most important protected wetlands in the Mediterranean and home to the rare Dalmatian pelican. From there the journey continues to Vlorë, the city where Albania’s independence was declared in 1912, with its seafront promenade, historic sites, and easy access to the Adriatic coast.

Combining quiet nature observation with coastal city life and a seafood lunch, this is a relaxed, well-rounded introduction to southwestern Albania — nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike will find something to enjoy.

The day runs approximately 10.5 hours, departing at 7:30 AM from Tirana and returning around 6:00 PM. The early start is deliberate: the best birdwatching conditions are in the first hours of the morning. The beach stop in Vlorë is weather- and season-dependent (best May–September), so bring swimwear in summer, and comfortable shoes for the lagoon boardwalk and the promenade. Binoculars are worth packing if you have them.

  • Birdwatching at Karavasta Lagoon, a RAMSAR-protected wetland reserve
  • The rare Dalmatian pelican, one of Europe’s most endangered birds
  • The Independence Museum and Flag Square in Vlorë
  • A stroll along Vlorë’s seafront promenade
  • A fresh seafood lunch by the coast
  • Optional beach time on the Albanian Riviera (seasonal)

Why This Journey

What Makes This Journey Different

On the water, not just at the viewpoint

A full hour by boat across Karavasta Lagoon brings you close to the pelicans and flamingos, rather than watching them from a distant hide.

Timed around the birds

The 7:30 AM departure exists so you reach the lagoon while the light and the bird activity are at their best — not because the itinerary is crowded.

One of Europe’s last pelican colonies

Karavasta is a RAMSAR-protected wetland and one of the last remaining breeding sites in Europe for the endangered Dalmatian pelican, alongside flamingos, herons and dozens of migratory species.

History where it happened

The Independence Museum in Vlorë is housed in the very building where the 1912 declaration was signed, a few steps from Flag Square and the statue of Ismail Qemali.
