Kotor Day Trip
The Bay of Kotor by Private Speedboat

Kotor Day Trip

Day Trip, Private Journey

A full day in Montenegro: Sveti Stefan, a private speedboat through the Bay of Kotor to an island church, a sea cave and a Cold War submarine tunnel, then Kotor’s medieval Old Town.

Cross into Montenegro for a full day exploring one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe: the Bay of Kotor, where a fjord-like sea winds between towering mountains dotted with medieval towns. After a scenic stop at the iconic islet of Sveti Stefan, the day’s centrepiece unfolds by private speedboat — weaving through the bay to a floating island church, a former prison turned luxury hotel, a glowing sea cave, and a Cold War-era submarine tunnel.

The day closes on foot, wandering the narrow marble streets of Kotor’s UNESCO-listed Old Town — a fortified medieval city known as much for its resident cats as for its churches and squares. Combining nature, history and a touch of Cold War intrigue, this is one of the most complete day trips in the region.

This is a long day, approximately 13 hours door to door, departing at 7:00 AM from Tirana and returning around 8:00 PM. A valid passport (or ID card, depending on nationality) is required to cross the border into Montenegro. The speedboat portion involves getting in and out of the boat at each stop, so non-slip footwear is recommended; the cruise is best enjoyed in the calm seas of spring through autumn.

  • Photo stop at the iconic Sveti Stefan island town

  • Mamula Island, a former prison now a luxury hotel
  • The crystal-blue waters of the Blue Cave
  • A hidden Yugoslav-era submarine tunnel
  • The medieval streets of Kotor’s Old Town, the “City of Cats”

A Glimpse of the Journey

Why This Journey

What Makes This Journey Different

A private speedboat, not a shared cruise

Three hours in the bay on your own boat — Our Lady of the Rocks, Mamula Island, the Blue Cave and the submarine tunnel, at your own pace rather than a group timetable.

Cold War history most day trips skip

The boat pauses at a tunnel carved into the cliffs during the Yugoslav communist era, once used to shelter military submarines — a five-minute stop that few itineraries include.

Sveti Stefan timed en route

The panoramic viewpoint over Sveti Stefan is built into the drive rather than sold as an add-on, so the islet’s terracotta rooftops are seen at their best without lengthening the day.

The border handled for you

A private vehicle, a professional guide and hotel pickup in Tirana mean the crossing into Montenegro is part of the service, not a logistics problem to solve on your own.
