Emerald Balkans: Lakes & Highlands
7 Days, Private JourneyA private spring journey across three countries — Albania’s highlands, the shores of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia, and the Ottoman lanes of Prizren in Kosovo.
This is the region at its most layered — a single week that moves from Albania’s highland towns to one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, and finally into Kosovo’s best-preserved Ottoman town. Each border crossing is a genuine shift in architecture, language and food, made seamless by staying in one private vehicle throughout.
From Korçë, the route crosses into North Macedonia to the UNESCO shores of Lake Ohrid, with its hilltop monastery and clifftop churches, before continuing north into Kosovo to Prizren, gathered beneath its fortress along the Bistrica river. It closes back in Albania through Peja and the Rugova highlands, a genuinely cross-border arc rather than three separate trips.
- Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The clifftop Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo
- A boat crossing to the Monastery of Sveti Naum
- Prizren’s Ottoman old town and fortress
- The Rugova highlands near Peć/Pejë
- Korçë’s old bazaar as the journey’s starting point
